A story by Kwadwo Gyan-Apenteng, Ghana

The name Gouda is an Ewe name that means ‘Soul Destiny’.

Gouda is a neo-traditional musical group that has erupted on the Ghanaian music scene. It was formed eight years ago as Junior Hewale to compliment the work of Hewale traditional group which was based at the University of Ghana campus. As explained by Kwadwo, Gouda band is composed of Begine Kebibaya, Agbo Kofi Missihu, Sebetse Tettey, Agbeko Gidi, Daetey Alohoetey, Kwame Kponyo Letsa and Nana Obiri Yeboah, all of them playing only with traditional instruments.

As Begine Kebibaya said, Gouda not only aims at playing traditional music but most importantly aims at uplifting African culture and at promoting their identity and their music as an African band.

Gouda launched their debut album in Accra at the Alliance Francaise on October 15 with a live performance by the group.
