| In response to the need identified at the Conference for local experts on cultural policy, a two-day seminar is being planned for 20-25 delegates (including Steering Committee members) prior to the Steering Committee meeting, also in Nairobi. Individuals who have an interest in cultural policy, who are prepared to participate in regular reading groups, on-line discussions and preparation of documents, are invited to apply to attend this seminar. | Plan for a Botswana National Arts Institute | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Botswana currently has no training institution dedicated to the arts. Nor does it have a theatre. It is the mandate of the Botswana Society for the Arts to provide both of these, through a public/private partnership. Detailed design of the theatre and performing arts facilities are now complete, and are awaiting funding to be constructed. A Strategic Plan for the creation of the Botswana National Arts Institute (BNAI) has recently been completed. It is the result of an EU-funded consultancy undertaken by Jeremy Avis and Ruth Stewart between May and July 2009 for the Botswana Society for the Arts. It provides both a clear statement of the reasons why the Institute is so needed in Botswana at this time and a clear step-by-step plan of action through which the Institute can be realised on the ground. The Strategic Plan contains both a broad analysis of the importance of the Creative Industries to developing economies generally and a statement of the specific positive impact the BNAI will have on Botswana’s own economy and society. The plan also defines the Vision, Mission and Objectives of the BNAI along with detailed descriptions of its management structure, programme of courses and activities. Finally a detailed timeline, budget and fundraising processes are also offered. It is available on request from BSA. The BSA is looking for funds to realise this project, which will be of great significance both to Botswana and the region.
