| Arterial Network biannual conference 20-21 September 2009 |
At least 75 delegates from more than 25 African countries are expected to attend the second Arterial Network conference scheduled for 20-21 September 2009 at the Goethe Institute in Johannesburg. It is likely that this number will be supplemented by up to 50 more Africans living in South Africa as well as South African delegates. For more information, write to Margerie@arterialnetwork.orgThe aims of the conference are to extend the Network’s footprint on the continent, to map a programme of action as a civil society partner based on the Nairobi Plan of Action on Cultural Industries adopted by AU Ministers of Culture in Algiers last year, to consolidate the Network organizationally and to prepare for participation in the World Summit on Arts and Culture that runs from 22-25 September, to help ensure that the Summit leaves a significant legacy for the African creative sector. A series of meetings of other organizations will take place at that time too including the Board of Art Moves Africa (who provided funds for a number of delegates to travel to the conference and Summit), ASSITEJ and U40, a network of people engaged in the arts on the continent and who are younger than 40! |
| Word Summit on Arts and Culture |
| “Meeting of Cultures: Creating meaning through the Arts” is the theme of this year’s triennial Summit, a project of the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies (IFACCA). In keeping with the themes and background of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, the keynote sessions, panel discussions and roundtable sessions have been structured to include a diversity of opinion and perspectives with more than 45 speakers drawn from all regions of the globe. Arterial Network delegates have been granted discounted registration fees to attend the Summit. One of the proposed concrete outcomes of the Summit for Africa is that a chapter of IFACCA be established on the continent with national arts councils and other public funding agencies combining in such a structure and thus forming another continental partner with which to engage in developing the arts and creative industries. | THE ECONOMY OF CREATIVITY WORKSHOP 9 to 10 September 2009 |
| This meeting is founded on the hypothesis that- There is a funding gap between creators and investors – why does it exist? This question is the first step into an exploration where participants aim to mitigate the funding gap by bringing together stakeholders from among public and private investors, together with entrepreneurs and creators within the creative industry. Stakeholders will define the problem concretely from their experience and knowledge, and identify and propose solutions. In other words, the meeting, rather than offer a ready-made solution, will facilitate stakeholders to jointly address the question. The exploration is being organised by The GoDown Arts Centre (Kenya); Nätverkstan Culture in West (Sweden); Mangowalla Ventures (Sweden) and their funding partners.
