The 38th Durban International Film Festival (DIFF), hosted by the Centre for Creative Arts, University of KwaZulu-Natal, with support from Berlinale Talents, is proud to announce the opening of applications for the 10th Talents Durban taking place 14-18 July under the theme “Perspectives; Seeing Things Differently.”
This year, Talents Durban opens submissions to African writers and directors with fiction, documentary and hybrid projects in development. Talents Durban will again welcome projects of all media formats such as film, television series, web series and content for mobile platforms.
As part of the 10year celebration, this year’s programme is also opened to alumni of Talents Durban, building on sustainable networks and opening doors for collaboration. As before, Talents Durban will host mentorship and hands-on training for emerging film critics. The Talent Press programme is a co-operation with FIPRESCI and the Goethe-Institut.
Talents Durban is also excited to include a new discipline in Animation and Visual Effects. The Animation Studio, will be launched as part of the programme to keep Africa at the forefront of current and new cinematic technology. Here, Talents of this discipline can share their ideas with fellow participants and experts, take part in various hands-on programmes, excursions, and discuss and improve their aesthetics and mechanics of their own work under the tutelage of renowned mentors and experts.
The 10th Talents Durban will give selected participants from across Africa the opportunity to forge relationships in an intensive five-day programme of one-on-one project consultation and industry networking activities with renowned mentors and professionals in the fields of production and distribution.
Perspectives; Seeing Things Differently
This year’s theme is an observation that film alone may not change the world but can show the world when it changes. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the programme, this edition looks to bring filmmakers from across the continent drawing inspiration from Africa’s diverse interpretations of storytelling, breaking away from the stereotypical and homogenous narrative of Africa.
Talents Durban aims to challenge the perspective of filmmakers and audiences alike. Our unique experiences and different views of life are the very sources of our stories. These may influence and rectify the reality where these stories are often not told by those who have lived these experiences and what this does to either further separate or connect emerging audiences.
This edition aims to highlight a new dimensional Africa with a fresh point of view that this continent is home to a melting pot of cultures, colours and stories. The 10th Edition looks to not only highlight the stories of Africa, but create a culture of Africans telling their own stories, and most importantly from their experience and perspective of cutting edge and modern cinematic technology.
The program will give access to the DIFF screenings, masterclasses and networking sessions and other activities with experts and industry role players from around the world, Talents will gain a new perspective and understanding of not only their discipline but of others in an effort to increase collaboration.
