Meeting of African Festival Directors in Zanzibar

The Arterial Network is planning a meeting of festival directors to take place in Zanzibar for July 2010. The meeting will include directors of a selection of genre-specific and multidisciplinary festivals.

The Arterial Network is planning a meeting of festival directors to take place in Zanzibar this coming July, targetted at film and multi-disciplinary-genre festivals, to run alongside the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF).

The ZIFF, founded in 1997, will take place from 10-18 July 2010. At least 20 festival directors from around the world are expected to attend the Festival this year.

The festival and the attendance present an ideal opportunity to reflect on the possible contribution of festivals to the growth of the African film industries in particular and to African development generally.

The Arterial Network aims to serve as a platform to network African film festivals and regional and international festivals showcasing African films, and other key players in the African film arena, as a means for advancing Africa’s film industries.

Secondly, we aim to identify key challenges, opportunities and priorities in promoting African filmmaking and distribution locally, regionally and internationally.

Thirdly, we aim to establish an organisational/networking framework and coordinating mechanism for African film festivals to undertake organisational, theoretical, training and other work to advance African film and to pilot a networking model for other festivals on the continent.
