First Steering Committee Meeting Takes Place

All ten members elected at the Conference in September 2009 attended the first Arterial Network Steering Committee meeting which followed the Cultural Policy Seminar in Nairobi on 26 and 27 November.

Some of the key outcomes were:
1.3.1 the election of an Executive Committee with Mulenga Kapwepwe and Tade Adekunle as Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson respectively, and Joy Mboya and Khadija el Bennaoui elected as the two additional Exco members;

1.3.2 the draft constitution adopted at the Conference was approved and is now available on our website;

1.3.3 the approval of a membership form that will be designed and posted on our website (we aim to have at least 1000 members by the end of 2010);

1.3.4 the approval of the roles of country representatives appointed or elected at Conference 09 in building country versions of Arterial Network (we aim to have at least 10 sustainable country networks by the end of 2010 and 30 by the end of 2012);

1.3.5 agreement in principle on a range of projects and activities concentrating on the organisational formalisation of Arterial Network, lobbying and advocacy, building capacity within the African creative sector, ongoing information gathering and dissemination, and increasing networking and collaboration on the continent and internationally;

1.3.6 agreement to host one major Arterial Network activity e.g. an annual conference on the African creative economy, in each of the five regions annually, with these events rotating to other regions in subsequent years;

1.3.7 agreement to develop regional secretariats to build Arterial Network around the continent, with the first such secretariat targeted for Kenya within the next 12-18 months;

1.3.8 to formalise the position of “head of secretariat” rather as Secretary General;

1.3.9 approval of a year plan for 2010 concentrating on inexpensive or already funded projects in the first half of the year to allow for a period of intensive fundraising for the next 2-3 period;

It was also agreed that where events are to be held in different regions and countries, all country representatives would be invited to submit applications motivating for these events to be held in their countries.  The Steering Committee would make their final decisions based on these submissions and the broader strategic interests of the Network.
