On the 26th of July 2016, the mentees taking part in Arterial Network's African Women in Cultural Leadership Programme (AWCL) 2016 held their first public seminar at the Alliance Française in Nairobi titled ‘Passion into Profit: Can Creative Women Be Business Minded Leaders?’ The aim of the programme is to empower women into cultural leadership roles in Africa through capacity building.
The seminar’s keynote address was delivered by Sitawa Namwalie, the renowned poet, writer and performer, and one of the AWCL mentors for 2016. The panel discussion that followed included the following participants:
Christine Nguku - Seasoned Journalist & Media Entrepreneur
Goodie Odhiambo - Founder, Goodie’s African Interiors and Gifts
Kangai Mwiti - Beauty Consultant & Makeup Artist
Thandiwe Muriu - Independent Professional Photographer
Attendees were encouraged to take part in the conversation by using #AWCL2016 on Twitter to share their highlights, questions and thoughts. The audience participation led to #AWCL2016 being the top trending topic in Kenya at the time. The hashtag was even more popular than Michelle Obama!
